Program Change: P00105

Program Title: ASL/English Interpreting
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Current INT 253: Comparative Linguistics: ASL/English (3-credits) Pre- or co-requisite ASL 203D: ASL 6 Proposed change INT 353: Linguistics of ASL (3-credits) Pre-requisite LING 210 and pre- or co-requisite ASL 303D: ASL 9; or instructor approval

Describe the reasons for making this change:
It has had, since the inception of the interpreting program, a co-requisite with ASL 203D: ASL 6 or pre-requisite of ASL 203D: ASL 6. At the same time, the program had a requirement of two years of ASL. We have since changed the ASL pre-requisites from two years of ASL to three years of ASL. Not changing INT 253 to 300-level was an oversight. We would like for this course to have a pre-requisite of ASL 303D: ASL 9 or co-requisite with ASL 303D: ASL 9. Changing the number of the course to INT 353 will address this oversight. The course is taught in ASL, the second language for most students, making the acquisition of complex linguistic content difficult to access. Further, requiring LING 210 as a prerequisite will provide students with the foundation necessary to comprehend the complex content in their first language before attempting to learn information about the linguistics of ASL in their second language.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
We would like to offer INT 353: Linguistics of ASL as a temporary course change in spring 2010. SIR data from INT 253 in spring 2009 will be compared to spring 2010. In addition, we will assess the difference that the LING 210 prerequisite and the prerequisite or co-requisite of ASL 303D will make in terms of comprehension of content in second language learners. We will use ongoing student feedback and review examples of student work. We will also see how this requirement affects the application process. This may take two years of offering this course at the 300-level.
