Program Change: P01113

Program Title: Art Major
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Last spring, the Art Department changed all art courses to 4 credits. This change altered all of the majors and minors in the program. After two rounds of advising, and some reflection, we realized that there were enough courses that listed A230 as a prerequisite that it should be included on the foundations list of requirements. This change to the major will help to clarify advising to students, and avoid ¿hidden prerequisites¿. To allow room for the number of credits this course uses, we also modified the total number of upper division credits required. This total more closely reflects our major in the current printed catalog (2012-13). We would like to make this change formal before the printing of the new major for clarification. The total number of required credits will remain at 84.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
Please see attached document for current catalog description. NEW PROPOSED CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Art BA/BS: (No change to Mission and Learning Outcomes) Art major prerequisites for studio concentrations: All 200 level studio courses require A130 and either A115 or A116. All 300 level studio courses require A115, A116, A130; most require A119. All 400 level studio courses require a completed 300 level studio sequence in the concentration and must be taken in numerical order. Any student wishing to combine studio art disciplines with visual communication design sequence work must take the Art Major, and must work closely with an advisor to fulfill all necessary requirements. For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
We will determine the effectiveness of these changes through our current assessment practices, which are reviewed every year during faculty retreats. Upon acceptance of this proposal, we will develop updated assessment pre-exams that reflect reorganized course content and expanded work in upper division courses. It will take a four-year cycle to determine the effectiveness of the shift from three to four credits through pre- and post-test assessment. The faculty will also monitor changes and compare results in student proficiency scores evaluated during portfolio presentations required in A429 and A419 (previously A498)
