Program Title: Forensic science minor: non-chemistry majors
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
As part of the global changes that the Chemistry Department is seeking for our forensic emphasis program, we are submitting the changes for the Forensic Science Minor: Non-Chemistry Majors at this time. Please refer to the documentation concurrently submitted for the Chemistry Major: forensic chemistry option program changes. These documents provide the overall rationale for the global program changes that are being submitted as a larger unit. Specific program changes to the Forensic Science Minor: Non-Chemistry Majors curricula are outlined within this document. We thank you for your time and energy in helping us implement these necessary changes within our program. Please find the proposed changes for our minor program attached below and a rationale for these changes in the attached documentation. HERE IS THE NEW PROPOSED PROGRAM TO REPLACE THE CURRENT CATALOG LISTING ABOVE: Forensic Science Minor for Non-Chemistry Majors: (28-29 credits) CH104, 105, 106 Introductory Chemistry (12) CH320 Intro to Forensic Science (3) CH430, 431, 431 Applications of Forensic Science (6) CJ321 Principles of Forensic Investigation (4) Choose one of the following (3-4 credits): CH 322 Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology (4 credits) CH 345 Introduction to Toxicology (3 credits) CJ 322 Forensic Anthropology (4 credits) CJ 323 Introduction to Crime Scene and Crash Diagramming (4 credits) CJ 328 Forensic Osteology (4 credits) CJ 333 Forensic DNA Analysis (4 credits) CJ 452 Criminal Procedure (4) It is suggested that students pursuing this minor take BI 101 as part of their LACC science requirement. Alternatively CH 104, 105, 106 may be applied to the LACC. In this case, an additional 12 hours of science elective approved by the minor advisor may be substituted.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
The current Forensic Chemistry catalog description for the 2012-2013 academic year is found on page 45. The current listing is shown below: Forensic science minor: non-chemistry majors (29 credits) CH 104, 105, 106 Introductory Chemistry (12) CH 320 Introduction to Forensic Science (3) CH 430, 431, 432 Applications of Forensic Science (6) CJ 321 Principles of Forensic Investigation (4) CJ 452 Criminal Procedure (4) It is suggested that students pursuing this minor take BI 101 as part of their LACC science requirement. Alternatively CH 104, 105, 106 may be applied to the LACC. In this case, an additional 12 hours of science elective approved by the minor advisor may be substituted. CH 161 is highly recommended as a general education elective.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
In the short term, the effectiveness of these program changes will be evaluated by objective measurements of student success within the classroom. These assessment tools will include course examinations, oral and written presentations, technical writing skills, and evaluation of laboratory skill sets acquired within our programs of study. In addition, all of our graduating chemistry students from any of our emphasis areas and/or our general chemistry degree option are required to complete the American Chemistry Society Graduate Placement Exam, which allows us to evaluate our overall program goals and compare our student preparedness with other institutes of higher learning. Long term evaluation of program success will be determined by the ability of graduates from our program to be successful candidates within the job market or in advanced degree programs.
