Program Change: P01247

Program Title: Community Health Education
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Proposed changes to the Community Health Education major requirements: 1.) Increase the required credit hours for HE 419 Internship in Health Promotion from 4cr to 8cr. Delete HE 499 Capstone (4). Rationale: Nationally, in the field of Public Health, employers value and expect entry level professionals to have extensive internship experience(s) that provide(s) the opportunity for students to demonstrate expected job skills and competencies. Our existing Internship requirement is minimal. We propose to increase our Internship requirement (HE 419) from 4 credit hours to 8 credit hours to provide our students with a more in-depth and meaningful community-based engagement, to clearly identify our Internship as the culminating experience for our majors, and to position our students well in a competitive job market. The total number of credit hours for the CHE major will not change as we will be deleting HE 499 Capstone. The Capstone class did not best meet our students¿ need for community/agency-based experience. 2.) Extend the minimum grade requirement, of C- or better, to all courses used to satisfy requirements for the major. Rationale: Currently, we require a grade of C- or better in all our Common Core classes. We propose to extend this minimal grade requirement to all courses used to satisfy requirements for the major to provide a measure of quality and consistency in academic performance.

Describe the reasons for making this change:

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The effectiveness of extending the Internship experience can be assessed in the short term through Exit Survey data collected each term from degree completers. Data collected from employers and alumni will also, over time, provide evidence of the utility of the proposed program changes.
