Baldwin, Ph.D. Communication Studies Date: November 21, 2013 Reference: Permanent approval of Foundations of Health Communication COM 351 The Communication Studies Department offers three different areas of concentration: Interpersonal and Organizational, Rhetoric and Critical Thinking, and Media, Culture, and Society. The Foundations of Health Communication COM 351 falls under the Interpersonal and Organizational area of concentration. Health communication has emerged as a contemporary area of study for the discipline and this course ensure our students¿ study of communication remains current and relevant. This course contextualizes communication through an exploration of the history, culture, and philosophy of medicine. The objective of the course is to offer a depth of understanding of communication across the spectrum of healthcare thereby allowing the students a better grasp on the significance of healthcare interactions. The scope of this course allow the students to explore diverse perspectives of people involved in health communication and in doing so, demonstrates how communication is created through the blending and negotiating of ideas. The blend of the information in this course draws upon current research, theories, contemporary issues, and real-life applications to facilitate understanding of the implications of various communication phenomena while awakening possibilities of areas of future contributions as professionals, patients or researchers.

Explores the spectrum of health communication that includes the evolution of this part of the discipline, patient/provider perspectives and interactions, culture, e-Health and end of life.
