Program Title: Criminal Jusitce

Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The 2009-10 catalog lists 12 credits of CJ 409: Practicum as required for the BA/BS in Criminal Justice. This proposal changes the degree back to the historical requirement for criminal justice degrees at Western, requiring 407W: Seminar in Criminal Justice as part of the practicum experience. The practicum requirement would then be: 8 credits of CJ 409 and 4 credits of CJ 407W.
Describe the reasons for making this change:
Requiring 12 credits of CJ 409, and not requiring CJ 407W, was a mistake, or an oversight, that occurred during the degree revision process a few years ago. This was never the intention of the criminal justice faculty; our intention was to reduce the CJ 409 requirement to 8 credits and keep the requirement of CJ 407W at 4 credits. Moreover, CJ 407 has always been a requirement for any criminal justice degree at Western Oregon University. The Criminal Justice Department has been reconciling this oversight by signing Substitution Forms (substituting 4 credits of CJ 407W for 4 credits of CJ 409) for all of our majors. This change will alleviate the need for these substitutions.

How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
This is really a cosmetic change since the criminal justice faculty have required CJ 407W all along. The biggest change is that we will no longer have to submit substitution forms for all of our students; we, and the Registrar's office, will notice the effect of this change immediately through a reduction in paperwork.
