Program Change: P00324

Program Title: Fire Services Administration
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Current catalog requires a declared minor for Fire Services Administration. Proposing elimination of the minor requirement.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
(1) Over 97% of all FSA students are distance students that under current policy must complete a WOU approved minor but take all the coursework at other institutions. (2) Statistical results from 2007 graduate survey indicated that ¿completion of minor¿ was a significant drawback to an otherwise valuable college experience for Fire Service Students (3) WOU is the only one of the seven National Fire Academy regionally affiliated Fire Service Administration schools that requires a minor (4) EOU, WOU¿s ¿cooperative partner¿ in the FSA program in Oregon, does not require a minor and in fact, uses this as a marketing / recruitment tool luring WOU admitted students into their program (5) Elimination of the minor will enhance the major by allowing students to take more FSA courses beyond the 48 credit hours required in order to reach the minimum 62 upper division credits. (6) Elimination of the minor will significantly reduce advising time as well as time consuming petition / transfer approval processes

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
- Current students will be notified and tracked to see if enrollments increase beyond the 48 credit hour requirement. - Admission and enrollment trends will be monitored - FSA Director and support staff should be able to take on additional projects as a result of the reduced advising time - On-going surveys and data collection - Feedback from Registrar¿s, Admissions, and other WOU departments
