Program Change: P00503

Program Title: Theatre (B.F.A.)
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The BFA Production Training curriculum replaces the five individual emphasis areas Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Technical Production and Stage Management with a single unified degree program. The unified curriculum maintains the total number of credits required in each emphasis area as well as all the required lower and upper division courses previously included in the production core. Replace the existing (2009-2010 Catalog) ¿Production Core¿ and ¿Individual Area Emphasis¿ requirements with: Production Training (71 credits) A 131 Beginning Drawing Systems 3 A 204, 205, 206 Art History I, II, III 9 TA 247 Sound 3 TA 252 Makeup 3 TA 253 Production Workshop 3 TA 353 Advanced Production Workshop 6 TA 308 History of Fashion 3 TA 334 Stage Management 3 TA 336 Stage Properties 3 TA 338 History of Architecture and Décor 3 TA 343 Costume Design 3 TA 345 Scenic Painting 3 TA 346 Scenic Design 3 TA 348 Lighting Design 3 TA 412 Portfolio Review 1 TA 354 or TA 355 Production Design/Management 4 Approved Production Electives 15 Production Electives A 135 Beginning Life Drawing 3 A 335 Intermediate Drawing 3 TA 344 Costume Crafts 3 TA 347 Drafting for Theatre 3 TA 349 Scenic Design Studio 3 TA 436 Advanced Costume Techniques 3 TA 443 Advanced Costume Design 3 TA 445 Scenic Painting II 3 TA 446 Advanced Scenic Design: CAD 3 TA 447 Digital Imagery for Theatre 3 TA 448 Advanced Lighting Design 3

Describe the reasons for making this change:
The existing emphasis area structure of the Theatre B.F.A. Production curriculum requires students to commit to a specialization very early in their college career. While useful for student's fortunate enough to find their focus before arriving at WOU, many talented technical theatre students do not develop such a focus until they have worked in theatre for several years. This rewrite of the production curriculum does not change the basic requirements for the degree with the exception that students do not need to declare an emphasis area. All the emphasis areas previously offered are still included and certain specialties (e.g. Stage Properties) that were not previously recognized can be supported within the new framework. The net effect of this rewrite should be the program becomes accessible to more students.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The effectiveness of this change should be determined based on increased student participation in the Theatre B.F.A. Production program.
