Program Title: BM & BA/BA in Music

Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
MUS 311, 312, 313 (second-year music theory) no longer will be required courses.
Instead, students will be required to select 9 credits of advanced music theory. Courses that satisfy this requirement will be so identified in the catalog and the student handbook.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
¿ The concepts and skills that students encounter and develop in second-year theory are covered in more focused and relevant ways in other theory courses.
¿ The current model pushes students into a full year of advanced theory in their sophomore year. Whereas some students are ready for this, many would benefit more by taking longer to assimilate the concepts.
¿ The current model is based on a one-size-fits-all approach to advanced theory, whereas our program is designed to allow students to explore and develop in ways that best suit their musical interests and needs.

How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
Three years after implementation, the first class will graduate under the new requirements. We will look at transcripts and assess the range of theory courses selected, and the relative success of those students in those theory courses and in other courses that rely on theoretical understanding.
