Program Change: P00562

Program Title: Geropsychology Minor
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
We are proposing that PSY 311 (Developmental Psychology) be added as one of the psychology options for the minor. The 27-hour Geropsychology Minor has three components. First, all students must take PSY 320 (Introduction to Geropsychology). Second, students must earn 12 additional credits from a selection of psychology options and this is where the additional course would go. Third, students select at least 11 hours from a set of interdisciplinary options. Please note that the proposed change does not increase the number of required credits for the minor, it simply expands the options. Here are the proposed minor requirements, which includes the addition of PSY 311: The geropsychology minor should be planned with a psychology adviser. The geropsychology minor consists of 27 hours of courses. PSY 320 (Introduction to Geropsychology) is required plus 12 additional hours taken from the following options: PSY 311 Developmental Psychology (4, proposed addition) PSY 409 Practicum (up to 4 hours can count toward the minor) PSY 446 The Psychology of Leadership (4) PSY 451 Biopsychology (4) PSY 460 Cognitive Neuroscience (4) PSY 483 Adulthood and Aging (4) PSY 484 Death, Dying, and Grief (4) In addition, students select at least 11 hours from the following options: BA 211 Financial Accounting (4) BA 310 Principles of Marketing (3) BA 391 Human Resource Management (3) COM 112 Interpersonal Communication (3) HE 325 Nutrition (4) HE 375 Epidemiology (4) HE 411 Health Communication (4) HE 434W Diseases (4) HE 485W Bioethics and Public Health (4) PS 350 Intro to Public Policy (3) PS 430 The Aging Society (3) PS 433 Healthcare Politics and Policy (3) The minor is not in the published catalog as it received OUS approval during the Summer of 2010.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
PSY 311 is a prerequisite for two of the psychology options in the minor (PSY 483 and PSY 484) and we are concerned about this hidden course requirement. From a pedagogical and curricular perspective, PSY 311 is very appropriate for this minor because it will help students develop a better understanding of development throughout the lifespan and thus help students better understand the challenges that some older adults face and the etiology of those challenges.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The effectiveness of these changes will determined when we do our planned pre-test/post-test analysis of what students learned while taking courses to satisfy minor requirement. We will assess understanding at the beginning of PSY 320 and then again when students have completed the majority of the minor.
