Program Change: P00573

Program Title: MA in Teaching Interpreting (MATI); MA in Interpreting
Graduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The program has not been published in a WOU catalog. We have proposed a Master¿s degree program in teaching interpreting. We are writing today, because we have made some changes to the program, including the program title, the number of credits, and seven of the classes. The program will be a 52 to 58-credit MA in Interpreting Studies with an Emphasis on Teaching Interpreting. Six courses will require changes. The changes are, for the most part slight, including name changes, credit changes, and minor content changes.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
Rationale As we continue to monitor the opportunities for graduate level education for interpreters, we have found that there are no graduate programs in teaching interpreting in the entire nation. Yet, there is sufficient need for an increase in the quality and quantity of interpreter educators, nationally, to warrant an MA program in this area. We also continued interviewed experts in the field of interpreting and determined that focusing our efforts on one program where the need is most prevalent and lowering the number of credits from the original proposal would be manageable and sustainable.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The program has been reviewed by subject matter experts via focus groups, individual interviews, and surveys. Additionally, as a part of this approval process will be reviewed by external reviewers. Continued review and revision of the program will take place over time via Advisory Council input/feedback, student input/feedback (SIR data as well as other informal measures), and faculty (full-time and adjunct) input/feedback.
