Program Change:
P00660
Program Title: Exercise Science
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
We propose adding the following language to the note following requirements of the major, as detailed on pg. 60 of the 2010-2011 WOU catalog (also found in the attached .pdf file):
*Exercise Science majors must have a grade of C- or better in courses used to satisfy requirements of the major.
Describe the reasons for making this change:
Many students completing this major pursue graduate and/or advanced licensing programs (such as in Teacher Education, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc.), most with certain undergraduate GPA requirements. The application of a minimum grade requirement in all courses used to satisfy requirements of the major will serve to ensure graduates are adequately prepared for the career paths associated with this major, and will also serve as a modest screening tool for students entering a popular major, with required courses regularly running at capacity.
For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
Our program is in the beginning stages of implementing our assessment plan, which includes academic profiles of majors at points of high-school graduation; at entry into the Exercise Science major; and at completion of the major. As 2011 graduates will represent only the third graduating class from the major in its present form (and with Banner codes allowing for associated data gathering), pre 'C-' data will be limited, but will none the less be used for comparison to subsequent years data, tracking the effect of the change both on the academic profile of the student attracted to the major, and of the graduate within the major. Additionally, data will be gathered as to the number of courses repeated due to a grade of less than 'C-'. As a program change, the first students directly effected would be entering freshman in Fall 2011. Clear indications of effect of the minimum grade requirement will thus potentially be most directly observable in the graduating class of 2015.
