Program Change: P00745

Program Title: Art Major in the Art Department
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Art faculty feel that the number of students taking graphic design warrants a major that allows them to focus specifically in the subject area, while continuing to include art fundamentals as the core skill set in the major. Creating a new major with unique prerequisites allows us to use current faculty and facilities more efficiently and eliminate some of the schedule conflicts that occurred when the advanced Graphic Design sequences were embedded in the studio art major. The Art major description will need to change slightly in the WOU catalog for 2011-12 (see below) because the options for taking graphic design as an upper-division sequence within the Art major will be limited. Students taking the Art major may elect to take A220 (with appropriate prerequisites), A221, A320, A321, and A322 as a graphic design concentration area in the Art Major. With this change, the other upper division sequences required in the art major must be taken in one or two of the following focus areas: drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking, or sculpture. Students wishing to take Visual Communication Design courses in two or three upper division sequence topics must follow the Visual Communication Design major requirements. Students wishing to take sequences in Interactive Design, Advanced Print Design, or Digital Motion will major in Visual Communication Design, rather than Art.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
The most recent catalog description is in the 2010-2011 catalog. CATALOG DESCRIPTION for 2011-12 ¿ ART MAJOR Art major prerequisites for studio concentrations: All 200 level studio courses require A115; some require both A115 and A130. All 300 level sequences must be taken in numerical order and require the prerequisite of both 200 level studio courses in the concentration. All 300 level courses require A116, A117, A119, A130, A131 and A135 (with the exception of Graphic Design, which also includes A260). All 400 level studio courses require a completed 300 level sequence in the concentration, and must be taken in numerical order. Graphic design may be used in the art major if students complete requirements through A322. Students wishing to take sequences in Interactive Design, Advanced Print Design, or Digital Motion must major in Visual Communication Design rather than Art.
