Justification for adding the minor
This minor track is being developed concurrently with a program change within the Chemistry Department, designed to add an emphasis track option for Chemistry Majors. Students selecting this track will major in Chemistry and receive a minor in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology: Natural Science Track. The new degree program is being designed as a chemistry-focused pre-professional degree option for students interested in continuing their education in Medical School, Pharmacy School, Dental School, or other professional degree, as well as for students interested in graduate school. In total, the degree plan is a multi-disciplinary degree earning students 64 credits in Chemistry, 39 credits in Biology, 12 credits in Physical Sciences, and 16 credits of Math and Computer Science. The Minor in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology: Natural Science Track differs from the Minor in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology: Community and Health Track in that it provides selected coursework that will allow pre-professional majors to complete all the prerequisite requirements for entry into advanced degree programs, such as Pharmacy School. The alternate minor track (Community and Health), has been designed as a chemistry emphasis minor for other health-related major programs including Health and Community Education, Psychology, and Gerontology, and is very similar to the format used by the Chemistry Department to create the Forensic Science Minor options. All but two of the courses required for the new minor program are currently offered in an onsite format at WOU. In addition to being offered onsite, the "Introduction to Toxicology Course" is offered as an online, distance-learning, course option. The two new courses that need to be developed for this program are: ¿Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology¿ and ¿Biochemistry of Complementary and Alternative Medicines¿. The new ¿Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology¿ and ¿Biochemistry of Complementary and Alternative Medicines¿ courses will be developed to include both an onsite and/or an online course option to facilitate student access, scheduling, and preferred style of learning. Course proposal details and prospective syllabi for the new courses have been submitted concurrently with this application to the Curriculum Committee for review. Overall, the new Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology Emphasis Program is an economical way to increase diversity and course offerings at WOU. It targets education in one of the fastest growing economic sectors of our country (Health-Related Fields) and thus, will be attractive program to students. The installation of the program at WOU is mainly based on course infrastructure that is already in place at WOU and does not require hiring of additional faculty members, or use of additional office or lab space. The program only requires the addition of two emphasis courses (7 credits) which can be supported through funds generated by student enrollment in the program.
