Proposed catalog description: Students who plan to use French, German, Spanish, or American Sign Language to satisfy the foreign language requirement for the B.A. degree, must maintain a C- average for all 101-203 courses in the language.
For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The current graduation requirement of D- in course work lacks incentives for students to reach meaningful proficiency levels, insults their intelligence, and cheapens the educational process.
Requiring B.A. candidates to meet a C- average in their 101-202 language courses helps assure that they will have a minimally acceptable level of proficiency. It reflects the belief of the Modern Languages faculty that adequate and useful language learning is essential for personal development and global citizenship.
This requirement should encourage students to take their language studies more seriously and to work toward usable levels. Students who fall below level have the opportunity to retake classes, work with tutors, and arrange study plans with their professors to help them improve their performance.
