Program Change: P00889

Program Title: Psychology Major
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
he Psychology Division recently developed a Gerontology Major and created many new courses for that major; we believe that five courses of those courses would be very appropriate to be used as electives for the Psychology Major or Minor. For context, the Psychology Major is 56 credit hours, 36 of those credits are required coursework but the other 20 credits are electives. The Psychology Minor requires 27 credit hours of psychology coursework including, PSY 201, PSY 202, and at least 15 hours of upper division psychology coursework. We are proposing that the following courses be potential electives for the Psychology Major or Psychology Minor: GERO 360 Cognitive and Physical Changes in Aging GERO 370 Aging and Mental Health GERO 407 Seminar GERO 430 Palliative Care and Chronic Illness GERO 480 Alzheimer¿s Disease and Other Dementias

Describe the reasons for making this change:

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
On our senior survey, we might ask how many Psychology Majors took Gerontology courses. Every year we survey our graduating seniors and one of the questions asks how satisfied they are with the availability of elective options. We will continue to track these responses in light of these curricular changes.
