Program Change: P00904

Program Title: Geropsychology Minor Name Change
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The Psychology Division is requesting a name change for the Geropsychology Minor (to Gerontology Minor). When we first developed the Geropsychology Minor, approximately two years ago, we did not have a Gerontology Major, traditional gerontology coursework, nor did we have true Gerontologists among our teaching faculty. The original Geropsychology Minor had an strong emphasis on older adulthood but the available courses were primarily psychological in nature and lacked traditional gerontology offerings, hence the title Geropsychology. During the process of creating a Gerontology Major, which officially began in the Fall of 2011, we developed both traditional and cutting edge, courses in gerontology and have hired highly qualified gerontologists to teach in our program. In October 2011, we submitted a Geropsychology Minor Proposal, which added some of the Gerontology Major coursework to the options for this minor. The purpose of the present proposal is to change the minor¿s name to Gerontology. The minor would still retain its exceptional number of interdisciplinary options but the new name (Gerontology Minor) would more accurately reflect the expanded curriculum. See attached documentation.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
This is the current catalog description, but please note that a recently submitted curriculum proposal was submitted that would add GERO courses to the minor (see attached documentation). For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
On our senior survey, we might ask how many Geropsychology Minors took Gerontology courses. Every year we survey our graduating seniors and one of the questions asks how satisfied they are with the availability of elective options. We will continue to track these responses in light of these curricular changes.
