Program Title: BM in Contemporary Music/Musical Theatre Emphasis

Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Add MUS 364 Ethnomusicology II (3) Add [MUS 321 or MUS 322 Choral or American Vernacular Conducting] (3) Remove MUEN 153 Musical Theatre: Vocal (3) Remove MUEN 353 Musical Theatre: Vocal (3) Add condition to MUEN 101-192 (6)that this music include 3 credits of MUEN 153. Add condition to MUEN 301-392 (6) that this music include 3 credits of MUEN 353. This is a small change that brings the BM/MT core in line with the rest of the BM in Contemporary Music. The only difference with the approval of this proposal is that the MUEN credits must include MUEN 153 and MUEN 353. As we have reviewed the effectiveness of this degree over the years at our annual retreat in September, the music faculty has determined that the lack of a second term of conducting disadvantages students in this track. This disadvantage will be exacerbated with the new structure of the Conducting sequence. Similarly, the absence of a second year of Ethnomusicology is a weakness for students who are especially in need of a broader world view. Under this proposal, the requirement for MUEN 153/353 stays the same, but it will replace other MUEN credits rather than replacing lecture courses.
