Program Change: P00922

Program Title: Geography
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
Proposal: Add GEOG 380: Environmental Conservation and GEOG 411: Cultural Geography to the list of options in the "Culture & Politics" concentration within the major. Rationale: *The content of these courses matches the purpose of the concentration and are comparable to currently listed courses. *These are courses that students have asked to substitute for listed requirements. *Adding GEOG 380 fulfills the intent of providing our students with an education that is both broad and offers opportunity for focus. *Not including GEOG 411 in the original list was a mistake from the last reform of the Geography major in 2007. *Will widen the pool of faculty that students with this concentration will have courses with.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
Current description of the concentration: Culture and politics (16) Choose four: GEOG 207 Geography and Film GEOG 327 Popular Culture in Global Perspective GEOG 420 The West and the American Imagination GEOG 421 The Changing American West GEOG 433 Political Geography GEOG 435 U.S. and Canadian Geopolitics GEOG 480 Nature and the American West Proposed description: Culture and politics (16) Choose four: GEOG 207 Geography and Film GEOG 327 Popular Culture in Global Perspective GEOG 380 Environmental Conservation GEOG 411 Cultural Geography GEOG 420 The West and the American Imagination GEOG 421 The Changing American West GEOG 433 Political Geography GEOG 435 U.S. and Canadian Geopolitics GEOG 480 Nature and the American West

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The goal of this change is to expand student choice in making progress towards graduation. This can be measured in terms of fewer requests for course substitutions towards fulfillment of the concentration.
