Program Change: P00925

Program Title: Sport Management
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
In academic year 2005-2006 a minor in Sport Management was added to the WOU curriculum. This minor was, and remains, the joint responsibility of the Divisions of Health & Physical Education and Business and Economics. The Divisions now propose revisions to the minor. The old minor was 28 credit hours. The revised minor is 26 credit hours. The revisions are as follows: 1. Courses added to the required classes: BA 243 (4) ¿ Business Statistics or MTH 243 (4) ¿ Introduction to Probability and Statistics (prerequisite MTH 111 with C- or better) BA 310 (3) ¿ Principles of Marketing 2. Courses eliminated from the required classes: EC 202 (4) ¿ Introduction to Macroeconomics PE 376 (3) ¿ Introduction to Sport Management 3. Courses added to the electives: *BA 412 (3) ¿ Sport Marketing (BA 310) *BA 414 (3) ¿ New Product Development (BA 310) EC 333 (4) ¿ Economics of Professional Sports (EC 201, 315WQ) or EC 334 (4) ¿ Economics of Collegiate Sports (EC 201, 315WQ) PE 376 (3) ¿ Introduction to Sport Management PE 488 (4) - Exercise Motivation and Adherence PSY 415 (4) - Psychology of Sports (PSY 201 & 202) *BA 412 and 414 are new courses; the paperwork is submitted concurrently with this request 4. Courses eliminated from the electives: PE 440 (3) ¿ Legal Issues in Sports PE 320 (4) ¿ Fitness for General Populations PE 373 (3) ¿ Recreational Sports Management The rationale for making these changes is as follows: A. Several courses are no longer taught or taught too infrequently (PE 320, 370, and 440). B. There are existing or new courses that are appropriate for the minor (BA 412, 414, PE 488, PSY 415). C. There is a misperception by some students that this minor is more about sports than the application of business, economic, and health & physical education theories to understand the sports industry. In reality the reverse is true: the minor provides the necessary academic rigor to understand the industry. Also, the proposed changes should make it clearer to students that specific quantitative skills are required by the major (especially BA 315WQ) and that the prerequisites required for the minor are integral and not superfluous. D. The prerequisite of BA 243/MTH 243 for BA 315WQ and prerequisite of BA 315WQ for EC 333 and EC 334 were part of curriculum changes to the Economics major and minor that went into effect academic year 2011-2012 E. The minor is also being restructured to make students aware that there are many possible career paths for which the minor may be useful besides working for a professional sports franchise. As indicated in the original proposal for the minor ¿[t]here are also myriad other opportunities in organizations that promote and run events in golf, automobile racing (e.g., NASCAR), tennis, winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, soccer, and so-called ¿non-traditional¿ sporting events like the X Games. Some students may prefer careers in collegiate or amateur sports (e.g., working in the athletic department of a university), working for a corporation that produces sports apparel and equipment (e.g., Nike, Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, North Face) or pursuing a graduate degree.¿ There are several supporting documents with this request; these are: Attachment A. The original proposal for a minor in Sport Management Attachment B. The current sport management minor Attachment C. The proposed revision to the sport management minor Attachment D. Summary of changes to the sport management minor Attachment E. Information to be included on a handout to assist students during advising

Describe the reasons for making this change:
Refer to Page 81 in the current catalog: http://www.wou.edu/provost/registrar/catalog/western_oregon_current_catalog.pdf The mission and learning outcomes will not change, only the required and elective courses as outlined in the summary statement and supporting documentation.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The best way to determine the effectiveness of the proposed changes is to see if students taking the minor rise to the challenge of accepting the minor as a coherent academic program in which a multi-disciplinary perspective reinforces their understanding of the unique challenges intrinsic to the sports industry and related endeavors such as amateur, community and recreational sports. If they do, they will learn that being ¿interested in sports¿ or a ¿sports fan¿ is insufficient for understanding the complexities and importance of sports as well as the necessity of being able to demonstrate a level of intellectual proficiency (especially in data analysis and quantitative and communications skills) required to qualify for career opportunities.
