Program Change:
P00926
Program Title: Business
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The Business major consists of 73 credits in business, economics, and statistics. Admission to the major program, which typically occurs during the junior year, also requires students to complete 21 credits in communications (COM 111), computer science (CS 121), economics (EC 201 & 202), math (BA 240/MTH 241), and writing (WR 135). The only significant change in the last ten years was replacing BA 390 (Management) with BA 362 (Business Ethics).
The current proposal is to replace EC 318 (Money and Banking) with the option to take EC 318, EC 319 (Public Finance), or EC 440 (International Trade). While it is common for business programs at other universities to require an upper division economics course, the specific course usually depends on the major field (e.g., accounting, finance, management, or marketing). A finance program may require Money and Banking, while international business requires International Economics and human resource management a Labor Economics course.
Rather than have a separate major program for each field, WOU¿s business major consists of a common core and a focus area of 24 credits in one or more areas. Students, with help from their advisor, can design a program that best supports their career objectives. Our proposal would also let them choose the economics course that is consistent with their focus.
We started with a longer list of options, including EC 395 (Managerial Economics), EC 441 (International Monetary Economics), EC 444 (Labor Economics), and EC 460 (Industrial Organization). The three courses we selected give a broad range of options while insuring that we can offer them all on a regular basis. They are also the most consistent with requirements at other schools for our primary focus areas.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
After one year we will examine enrollment patterns to see which courses business majors are choosing based on their focus areas.
