Program Change: P00927

Program Title: Honors Program
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The Faculty Senate Honors Committee has recommended that the following changes be made to the Honors Thesis Credits and Process. As per senate policy, the Honors Committee is the curriculum committee for the Honors Curriculum and routes its recommendations directly to the executive committee. Summary of Changes: 1. Credit, title, and description change to existing H 303 (Thesis Development Seminar). New title will be ¿Thesis Orientation," new credits will be 1-2, and new description will read ¿Orientation to the Honors Thesis/Senior Project, including completion of thesis proposal. Enrollment limited to students in the Honors Program. Eligible for the RP grade option.¿ 2. New course created -- H 353, ¿Thesis Development,¿ 1-2 credits. Description will read ¿Introductory, developmental work related to the Honors Thesis/Senior Project, including literature review, timeline, and outline. Enrollment limited to students in the Honors Program.¿ 3. Description change to existing H 401. New description will read ¿Individual research and original writing in approved areas of work. Enrollment limited to students in the Honors Program. May be repeated up to a limit of six credit hours.¿ 4. Credit, title, and description change to existing H 403. New title will be ¿Honors Senior Project/Thesis," new credits will be 3-6, new description will read ¿Individual research and original writing related to the Honors thesis/senior project. Enrollment limited to students in the Honors Program. May be repeated up to a limit of six credit hours. Eligible for the RP grade option.¿ Rationale for changes: These changes are mostly cosmetic and were made to improve and clarify the process for completing the Honors thesis/senior project. The changes will also more closely align Honors credits with similar credits in academic departments. Other changes update outdated descriptions.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
If these changes are approved, the following modifications should be made correspondingly to the two Honors sections of the catalog: 1. Pg. 42 (2011-12 catalog): add ¿Thesis Development, H 353 (1-2)¿ to third year courses. 2. Pg. 42: modify title listed for H 303 in third year courses to ¿Thesis Orientation, H 303 (1-2)¿ 3. Pg. 42: modify current incorrect title for H 403 in fourth year courses to ¿Honors Senior Project/Thesis, H 403 (3-6) 4. Pg. 42: eliminate the two ¿total¿ lines appearing in the 1st/2nd year and the 3rd/4th year entries, as this is inaccurate (students can complete coursework in other years besides what it listed) 5. Pg. 143: enter all changes from the Summary of Changes section immediately above for courses H303 (credit, title, and description change), H353 (new required course), H403 (credit, title, and description change), and H401 (description change). Current catalog descriptions were provided for the individual course change proposals (C01864-C01867)

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
The goal of these changes is to ensure a more smooth and successful transition from the junior year thesis orientation classes to the completion of an Honors thesis during senior year.
