Program Change: P00093

Program Title: MSED Language Arts
Graduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
This change will allow MSEd in Language Arts students to take classes in their content core (language arts) from the College of Education as well as from Liberal Arts and Sciences approved courses. Under the current catalog, (2009-2010), courses in education are not listed as approved selections for the MSEd in Language Arts content core. Additionally, selected previously "required" classes are now listed as "recommended." See new catalog language: English/Language Arts : Elementary/Middle (18) Writing (3-4) WR 540, Teaching of Writing (4) recommended. Lingusitics (3-4) LING 550, Grammar and Writing (4) recommended. Literature (3-4) And other approved electives to reach a minimum of 18 graduate credits. To reach 18 credits, students can choose 500 or 600 level courses in Education, English, other Humanities fields, Theatre Arts or other Liberal Arts and Sciences content areas as approved by MSEd advisor. At least 3 credits of the total need to be 600 level courses to meet graduate school requirements. English/Language Arts: High School (18) Writing (3-4) WR 540, Teaching of Writing, recommended. Lingusitics (3-4) LING 550, Grammar and Writing (4) recommended. Literature (6-8) Theory & Criticism (3-4) And other approved electives to reach a minimum of 18 graduate credits.

Describe the reasons for making this change:
1) Feedback from students that they would like to be able to include courses in reading, literary theory, teaching literature, working with ESOL students on reading and writing, children's/young adult literature, etc. which are currently offered in the College of Education as options for their content core. Such courses are appropriate and beneficial to elementary, middle, and high school teachers pursuing a degree to expand their knowledge about teaching language arts. 2) To expand the graduate offerings available to MSEd students, including courses that are taught during the late afternoons/evenings each term to better match the needs of practicing teachers, which the vast majority of our MSED students are. 3) Additionally, these expanded offerings will allow MSEd in language arts students to have a greater number of 600 level courses in their content core if selected. (Courses with only other graduate students enrolled.)

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
Effectivenss will be determined through individual advising with students, feedback on exit surveys with graduating MSED students, as well as the quality and depth of exit requirements
