Program Change: P00989

Program Title: Art minor: Combination studio/Art History
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The Art Department is proposing to change studio art and design courses from 3 to 4 credits and to restructure the program in correlation with this shift. In addition to these changes to studio courses, the required art history courses for the BA and BS degrees are changing. Instead of allowing students to fulfill the art history requirement of the major with 12 credits from any three 4-credit art history classes (which often results in students taking advanced courses for which they are not prepared), the department is proposing that students be required to take the introductory 200-level art history survey courses to accomplish the 12 credits they need. This will not only ensure that students will have a better foundation in art history from both the Western and non-Western traditions, but will also align the art history component of our degree programs with the vast majority of art programs across the state and nation. Because of these larger changes to the Art Department curriculum, this minor was deemed to be no longer viable. If BA/BS Art majors and Art History minors are required to take the 200-level Art History sequence before moving into upper division Art History coursework, it does not seem reasonable to offer a minor where students completely skip the 200-level sequence. This minor has rarely been used. Students wishing to study courses similar to this will be advised to take either the Art History minor or The Arts minor. Students taking The Arts minor can choosetwo or more areas of study within the Creative Arts, and contract which courses they take with their advisor to fulfill the 12 upper division requirement; Art History is one option.

For Dean Review only:
How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined?
We will no longer assess this program. We will determine the effectiveness of the rest of our changes through our current assessment practices, which are reviewed every year during faculty retreats. It will take a four-year cycle to determine the effectiveness of the shift from three to four credits through pre- and post-test assessment. The faculty will also monitor changes and compare results in student proficiency scores evaluated during portfolio presentations required in A429 and A498.
