Program Change: P00992

Program Title: Art minor: Art History
Undergraduate
Describe the proposed degree program change(s) in terms of how the changes differ from the program as currently approved and published in the latest WOU catalog (specify the latest catalog date).
The Art Department is proposing to change studio art and design courses from 3 to 4 credits and to restructure the program in correlation with this shift. This change will align our program with the rest of the public universities in Oregon: all of the other universities in Oregon, as well as two of our feeder community colleges (Chemeketa and Linn-Benton) have already shifted their studio art courses to 4 credits. Aligning our university will establish uncomplicated transfer credit equivalencies for students transferring from these institutions. This transition will improve the art student¿s experience within the art major: more attention and time to focus on fewer classes, more streamlined advising, and fewer conflicts in the schedule of classes. Students will also benefit from an increase in instructors¿ time dedicated to preparation, maintaining studio spaces, and availability outside of class. In addition to these changes to studio courses, the required art history courses for the BA and BS degrees are changing. Instead of allowing students to fulfill the art history requirement of the major with 12 credits from any three 4-credit art history classes (which often results in students taking advanced courses for which they are not prepared), the department is proposing that students be required to take the introductory 200-level art history survey courses to accomplish the 12 credits they need. This will not only ensure that students will have a better foundation in art history from both the Western and non-Western traditions, but will also align the art history component of our degree programs with the vast majority of art programs across the state and nation. As a result of these changes to the art history component of the BA and BS degrees in art, similar changes are being proposed for the art history minor, to align it with the larger program. Thus, it is proposed here that the art history minor will require the entire 200-level introductory sequence (A204, A205, A206) as well as four additional courses from upper-division art history offerings (with at least two of those at the 300-level). The total credits of this minor (28) will remain the same. This change to the art history minor will have the additional benefit of making it less ¿upper-division heavy,¿ thereby bringing it into better alignment with the structure of other minor programs across campus.
