New Course Description: An introduction to the biology of microorganisms with an emphasis on infectious human disease agents, immunology and the control of disease through antimicrobial strategies and vaccination. Designed for students interested in pre-nursing, pre-dental hygiene and entry level positions in public health laboratories. Laboratory component emphasizes skills with microscopes, identification testing and includes practical exams. Not open for credit to biology majors or minors. However, credit may be applied to the Human Biology minor. Three hours of lecture and one two-hour lab per week. Prerequisites: A passing grade of C- or better in BI 102 or BI 211; offered winter and spring terms. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Based on enrollment trends and to encourage student preparedness and success, the Biology Department would like to place a minimum grade requirement of C- or better on the BI 102 or BI 211 prerequisite coursework for entrance into Microbiology for Health Sciences (BI 318). Without sufficient mastery of content presented in prerequisite coursework, students do not have the foundation necessary onto which to successfully overlay the principles of microbiology. With respect to enrollment trends, this new course benchmark will also assist in making available spots in the sequence for students adequately prepared to meet the rigorous demands of the course. Currently, nearly all students enrolled in the sequence are pre-nursing or Biology Minors (typically pursuing Community Health degrees). Finally, we propose changing the previous BI 212 prerequisite option to BI 211, which is consistent with prerequisites for BI 234 and provides better flexibility for students who decide to leave the Biology Major after their first term. Indeed, assessment and tracking data show that most students who choose this option do so after BI 211, not BI 212. This course description change involves no new FTE or space requests. |
Students/Program affected: Some Pre-Professionals (-nursing; -dental hygiene) Human Biology minors |
