Current Course Description: Study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Uses lecture and laboratories utilizing human cadavers to cover the following topics: integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and endocrine system. Three one hour lectures and one two-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisites: BI 102 or BI 211; offered fall and winter terms. |
New Course Description: Study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Uses lecture and laboratories utilizing human cadavers to cover the following topics: integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and immune system. Three hours of lecture and one two-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisites: A passing grade of C- or better in BI 102 or BI 211; offered fall and winter terms. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Based on enrollment trends and to encourage student preparedness and success, the Biology Department would like to place a minimum grade requirement of C- or better on the BI 102 or BI 211 pre-requisite coursework for entrance into the Human Anatomy and Physiology sequence (BI 234). Without sufficient mastery of content presented in BI102 or BI211 prerequisite coursework, students do not have the foundation necessary onto which to successfully overlay the principles of human anatomy and physiology. With respect to enrollment trends, this new course benchmark will also assist in making available spots in the sequence for students adequately prepared to meet the rigorous demands of the course. Currently, nearly all students enrolled in the sequence are pre-nursing, Community Health, or Exercise Science students - which require C/C- or better for successfully completion of BI 102 for their degrees/ prerequisite coursework. Finally, based on assessment data and to better prepare students for BI 318 (Microbiology for the Health Sciences), which is taught every winter/spring term, we exchanged the teaching of the immune system (currently in BI 235, often taken in winter) with the teaching of the endocrine system (currently in BI 234, often taken in fall). BI 318 is required for all pre-nursing and by the Human Biology minor, which many Community Health students are electing to pursue. This course description change involves no new FTE or space requests. |
Students/Program affected: Some Pre-Professionals (-nursing; -dental hygiene; -physical therapy; -occupational therapy) Community Health majors Exercise Science majors (discussed with Dr. Pederson, C- is/becoming a program benchmark) Physical Education Teacher Education majors Human Biology minors |
