Current Course Description: Development of the vertebrate body form fertilization through organogenesis; includes analyses of selected problems in morphogenesis, differentiation and growth. Two lectures and two three-hour laboratory periods offered winter term of even-numbered years. Prerequisites: BI 315 and one year of chemistry, or consent of instructor offered winter term of even-numbered years. |
New Course Description: Development of model vertebrates and invertebrates from fertilization through organogenesis; includes analyses of early cell cleavage, morphogenesis, differentiation, and growth. Three hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory per week offered winter term of even-numbered years. Prerequisites: BI 315 and one year of chemistry, or consent of instructor offered winter term of even-numbered years. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The foundation of early development and embryogenesis includes examples from invertebrates that offer insight into vertebrate development. Mastery of content about both vertebrate and invertebrate development encompasses exam topics on the GRE, the MCAT, the DAT, and other graduate assessment tools. A course including these key examples has historically been taught; the proposed course name change more accurately reflects the breadth of this course. Development-focused courses that encompass both vertebrates and invertebrates are offered at several other OUS institutions, including OSU, UO, SOU, and PSU. This course description change involves no new FTE or space requests. |
Students/Program affected: Biology Major elective option for several emphases Biology Teacher Education degree NOTE: the Biology minor does NOT require developmental biology, but students can select it as an option. |
