Catalog Description:
This course prepares ROTC students to employ critical thinking through the study of American military history and the development of the profession of arms. The course covers major military engagements from 1865 through the current operating environment. By analyzing these battles the student will gain an understanding of how the principles of war are applied and how leadership decisions affected the outcome of the battle. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
Course Goal and Objectives:
- The objective is to meet the Army Cadet Command regulation for providing this required class to Army ROTC students prior to commissioning. - To allow the ROTC student to understand their profession by discussing the role of history. - Develops awareness of the relationship of the military establishment to society. - Develops their interest in the evolution of war and the progression of military professionalism.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
To be in compliance with Army Cadet Command regulations. MS 305 is a permanent course and replaces MS 405 American Military History, under Special Topics.
Faculty and facilities needed:
- Instructor must attend the Military History Instructor Course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. - Space for 20 students
Brief Course outline:
- Introduce students to the history of weapons - Analyze major military engagements from 1865 to the present day - Submit two biography writing assignments of US military or US political leaders - Present a battle analysis of a major US military engagement
