Course Goal and Objectives: Introduction to issues of idea development, audience, and message, multi-page voice, continuity, and rhythm. Use design development processes and aesthetic awareness in digital communication projects for web and interactive media. May include software instruction connected to project goals. Introduction to technical issues in effectively constructing websites. Course goals: Understanding of time based media Elementary knowledge of HTML coding and CSS Ability to sample sound and edit them using open source software Creating simple web animations Elementary video editing techniques Develop designer and client interaction |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Necessary course for proposed expansion of visual communication design major to include animation and time-based media as requested by WOU administration. |
Faculty and facilities needed: Searches have been approved for tenure-track faculty members in Interactive Digital Media, and Graphic Design/Design Theory. These searches are currently in progress. Web design courses are currently taught by a non-tenure track faculty. In 2011-2012, we will hire NTT faculty with motion, narrative, video, animation specialization to teach these courses during the launch of the new program. |
Brief Course outline: 3 credit hours/6 contact hours Course Goals Understanding of time based media Elementary knowledge of HTML coding and CSS Ability to sample sound and edit them using open source software Creating simple web animations Elementary video editing techniques Develop designer and client interaction Reading Assignments and Papers Readings, short papers or oral presentations will be assigned. Papers are to be typewritten, double-spaced and done in standard MLA form as described in Diana Hackers A Writers Reference, 6th edition. Your paper is your opportunity to develop your thoughts and to have something to say during the discussion. Papers will be collected on the due date, graded and returned to you. In grading papers, everything counts: formatting, ideas, clarity of expression, correct spelling and punctuation, etc. Critiques Critique days: students are expected to be ready to show their work at the start of class. Finish your project well in advance, so that you have time to resolve any technical issues before the time of the critique. |
