Catalog Description: A survey of professional practice in visual communication design. Career strategies, professional ethics, business practices, and preparation for portfolio presentation. Capstone experience for visual communication design majors includes oral presentation of each students portfolio. Prerequisites: A322, upper-division standing. |
Course Goal and Objectives: This is a survey course of basic professional concerns and practices for advanced visual communication design students who are preparing to enter the working world as professional artists. The goal of this class is to introduce many of the professional aspects of working as a designer. Course content will consist of lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and presentations. Invited specialists will speak about subjects in a variety of related areas. Major emphasis on production and presentation of portfolios, career readiness, and business practices. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Necessary course for proposed expansion of visual communication design major to include animation and time-based media, as requested by WOU administration. This course is similar to the art majors capstone experience (A498 Professional Concerns) with emphasis on the specific needs of Visual Communication Design students. |
Faculty and facilities needed: Searches have been approved for tenure-track faculty members in Interactive Digital Media, and Graphic Design/Design Theory. These searches are currently in progress. One of these new faculty will teach this course. Design courses are currently taught by a non-tenure track faculty. In 2011-2012, we will hire NTT faculty with motion, narrative, video, animation specialization to teach these courses during the launch of the new program. |
