Catalog Description: This is the first in a series of two courses where students examine interpersonal communication and discuss the role of an interpreter. Students will practice and apply principles of invention, organization, language, and delivery with focus on the development of skill and confidence in interpersonal communication (e.g., varied contexts/styles/ registers/topics) in English and in ASL. Students analyze and evaluate speeches in public settings; critically study invention, arrangement, and style. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will be able to: ¿ Examine linguistic structure and function in context, including the analysis of style, genre, register, and dialect. ¿ Identify and describe general models of communication competence. ¿ Understand communication competence in interpersonal relationships, situations of conflict, intercultural interactions, instructional communication, and organizational settings. ¿ Understand the relationship between communication competence and leadership. ¿ Improve signed/spoken communication/presentation skills. ¿ Care for vocal apparatus for spoken language. ¿ Understand ergonomics and care for signed language production apparatus. |
