To:
Course Prefix & Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
MUS 321 Choral Conducting 3 - 3

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Choral Conducting

Current Course Description:
Continued study of techniques in instrument conducting including analysis of composi- tions conducted. Work with transpositions and full scores. Opportunity to conduct in- strumental ensemble. Prerequisite: MUS 320

New Course Description:
Study of techniques in choral conducting, including analysis of compositions conducted. Preparation of repertoire with special emphasis on problems and solutions in contemporary music. Prereq: MUS 320

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The conducting sequence currently includes three terms: Basic, Instrumental, Choral. This model addresses conducting in the context of traditional instrumental and choral ensembles, but fails to address conducting ensembles that include rhythm sections and improvisation. The new sequence will include a section in American Vernacular Conducting, which will rectify this weakness. The new sequence, then will be: Instrumental, Choral, American Vernacular. MUS 320 (now retitled "Instrumental Conducting") will remain the prereq for the other two terms, either or both of which may be taken to satisfy degree requirements.
Students/Program affected:
BM & BA/BS in Music
