Catalog Description: Students prepare to teach translation, consecutive interpreting (CI), and simultaneous interpreting (SI). They use self-assessment, self-reflective, and research-based practices in teaching design and implementation. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will be able to: Identify the stages of development in a student learning to transfer meaning between two (or more) languages. Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the translation task. Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the consecutive interpreting task. Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the simultaneous interpreting task. Refer to research-based practices in lesson plan development and during in-class delivery. |

Brief Course outline: Week 1: What is meaning transfer? Week 2: What are the complexities and challenges of meaning transfer? Week 3: What skills/tools are needed to successfully transfer meaning between languages (and people)? Week 4: In what order do the skills need to be learned/taught in order to build a strong foundation for meaning transfer? Week 5: Leading students through consumer assessment Week 6: Leading students through discourse analysis Week 7: Leading students through the potential pitfalls of live meaning transfer (CI/SI) Week 8: Leading students through the potential pitfalls, cont. Week 9: Using student data/feedback/grades to design future class sessions Week 10: Sharing sample lessons for meaning transfer courses |
