Catalog Description: Students prepare to teach translation, consecutive interpreting (CI), and simultaneous interpreting (SI). They use self-assessment, self-reflective, and research-based practices in teaching design and implementation. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will be able to: ¿ Identify the stages of development in a student learning to transfer meaning between two (or more) languages. ¿ Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the translation task. ¿ Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the consecutive interpreting task. ¿ Create/deliver lesson plan(s) on the basic principles of meaning transfer in the simultaneous interpreting task. ¿ Refer to research-based practices in lesson plan development and during in-class delivery. |

Brief Course outline: ¿ Week 1: What is meaning transfer? ¿ Week 2: What are the complexities and challenges of meaning transfer? ¿ Week 3: What skills/tools are needed to successfully transfer meaning between languages (and people)? ¿ Week 4: In what order do the skills need to be learned/taught in order to build a strong foundation for meaning transfer? ¿ Week 5: Leading students through consumer assessment ¿ Week 6: Leading students through discourse analysis ¿ Week 7: Leading students through the potential pitfalls of ¿live¿ meaning transfer (CI/SI) ¿ Week 8: Leading students through the potential pitfalls, cont. ¿ Week 9: Using student data/feedback/grades to design future class sessions ¿ Week 10: Sharing sample lessons for meaning transfer courses |
