Catalog Description: This course will consider the historical and philosophical foundations of curriculum and assessment planning as well as current research and policy in curriculum and instruction. Emphasis will include: curriculum frameworks, interdisciplinary and differentiated instruction that is culturally and developmentally sensitive, attention to content area specific curriculum and learning, and authentic assessments for learners. |
Course Goal and Objectives: ¿ Explain the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of curriculum decision-making in education. ¿ Discover and explore the process of curriculum change and improvement and creatively apply this knowledge in school based settings. ¿ Design and implement innovative curriculum practices that draw upon research into content area discipline knowledge, developmentally appropriate practices, and socio-cultural understandings of schools and curriculum. ¿ Demonstrate principles of reflective practice, evaluating curricular choices and assessment measures as implemented with learners in P-12 school settings. ¿ Demonstrate the ability to create authentic, innovative, content-area appropriate forms of assessment for students in P-12 settings. ¿ Demonstrate systematic skills in observing, collecting, and analyzing data from assessments designed for classroom practice. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course will be available to MSEd students who desire an inter-disciplinary course that concentrates on advanced curriculum and assessment development. This course will allow students to concentrate on developing both curriculum and assessments that are appropriate for their endorsement level as well as their chosen content area of study for the MSEd. This course allows the MSEd students to focus on curriculum, instruction, and assessment as well as content area knowledge. There is currently a high demand from MSEd students across programs for elective choices as well. |
Faculty and facilities needed: This course will be taught once per academic year, beginning with the 2011-2012 school year as an option for MSEd students. |
