Current Course Description:
Focuses on the sociolinguistic factors that affect language variation and language change. Sociolinguistic factors that influence communication and strategies for analyzing discourse will be identified and described. Prerequisites: ASL 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, 203, LING 210, WR 135,or permission of instructor

New Course Description:
Focuses on the sociolinguistic factors that affect language variation and language change. Sociolinguistic factors that influence communication and strategies for analyzing discourse will be identified and described. Prerequisites: ASL 303, LING 210, WR 135,or permission of instructor

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Students need to have adequate receptive skills to understand most videos and resources used in the class are in ASL, as well as the members of the Deaf community and Deaf culture who present in the class. In addition, students are expected to present in the class using ASL, so their expressive skills in ASL must be adequate for high level academic discourse.

This course will only affect students majoring or minoring in ASL Studies.
