Catalog Description: Introduction to the historical, cultural, and philosophical foundations of our system of American public education. Students will reflect upon and critique their own educational experiences and articulate their own beliefs and values about teaching, learning, and schooling. Students will also examine current and historical roles, expectations, stereotypes, and characterizations that define teaching as a profession. |
Course Goal and Objectives: ¿ Students will be able to identify and discuss key historical figures and events in the history of the evolution of American public education ¿ Students will be able to identify and discuss several philosophical perspectives on education as well as associated educational theories that have shaped educational practices ¿ Students will articulate and defend their own emerging system of beliefs and values about the role of education in culture and society as well as classroom practices aligned with these beliefs and values |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Helping pre-service teachers understand the historical, cultural, and philosophical origins of our system of American education is critical. From this, we can better understand why schools are structured the way they are, what role schooling plays in culture and society, and what role educators must play in the evolution of these beliefs, values, and practices. These are big-picture conversations that must be carefully nurtured prior to entry into the Education Core at which point students become overwhelmed with the application of practices and can lose sight of core beliefs and values if these have not already been firmly established. |
Faculty and facilities needed: Existing capacity currently exists within the Division of Teacher Education and no unique facilities needs are required. |
