Course Goal and Objectives: Semiweekly 1-hour sessions are led by mathematically strong students. The class is offered Pass/No Credit, and student instructors will take roll; attendance is mandatory. The benefits for participating students typically include better performance in corresponding courses and deeper understanding of course concepts. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The Student Enrichment Program is a federally funded grant program through the U.S. Department of Education. In the current grant proposal for the 2010-2015 budget cycle, grant funds were awarded contingent on the offering of supplemental instruction for Math 70 and Math 95 to SEP participants who do not place into math courses that fulfill graduation requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree. The grant's Plan of Operation section applicable to the offering of supplemental instruction is defined below: Supplemental Instruction, Remediation and Learning Group Seminars Supplemental math instruction is provided for SEP participants enrolled in remedial math courses (Math 70 and Math 95). This instruction is offered without cost to SEP participants by upper level math majors selected and trained by math faculty members. Advanced students majoring in math and approved by their department heads are invited to become student Learning Group Seminar leaders to provide another mode of instruction for SEP participants enrolled in Math 70 and Math 95. Learning Group Seminar leaders provide group instruction for two hours every week during the the academic term. |

Brief Course outline: The weekly supplemental instruction sessions focus on the content presented during the Math 70 and Math 95 class meetings. The Learning Group Seminar leader(s) meet weekly with math faculty who offer suggestions for reinforcement and review of course content as well as instructional strategies to address students' varied learning styles. Emphasis is placed on Skills Test preparation, answering students' questions, assistance with homework, and reviewing content for upcoming exams. The instructors assisting the Learning Group Seminar leaders may be different faculty from term to term depending on the math schedule of classes as well as the class schedules of the selected Learning Group Seminar leaders. |
