Catalog Description:
Explores current applications and concepts of technology to enhance learning, communicating, and collaborating for personal and professional growth. Particular emphasis on the use of technology in educational contexts.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Within this course students will develop a conceptual framework for using educational technology, analyze strategies for integrating technology into educational contexts, and evaluate its potential for the improvement of teaching and learning. This project-based course is taught through a combination of lecture, discussion, demonstration and hands-on practice. In this class, students will: ¿ explore and discuss the impact of interactive socializing processes online; ¿ explore a variety of ways to display information through words, images, sound, and video; ¿ become familiar with concepts of visual design; ¿ study how and why we can organize information spatially; ¿ find and evaluate electronic resources; ¿ explore the use of new devices and products in education; ¿ find and identify useful interactive educational resources online; ¿ evaluate, design and build educational websites; and ¿ examine ways that all of these techniques can be used to enhance teaching and learning.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
We believe we can more effectively address deficits in requisite technology skills at the 200-level rather than wait until the 400-level as our current program is structured. ED 421 Technology Integration, our current Education technology course in our undergraduate/post-bacc. initial teacher licensure program also focuses on integration of technology skills and resources into teaching and learning. Because this is a critical agenda, this aspect of the course will be embedded in our content pedagogy courses in the revised program including ED 434/534, ED 436/536, ED 453, and ED 352.
