Catalog Description:
This course introduces students to learning and development through readings and instruction ranging broadly across the field. Students will encounter theories of learning from a variety of perspectives, reflecting on their own experiences, and applying new knowledge to their future goals in education. Students will gain a sense of the development of learning theories and the influence of these theories on the structures and practices of schooling. Assignments will be embedded in early field experiences in local schools and classrooms.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Students will learn and apply key concepts, models, and strategies related to different theories of learning including behaviorist, cognitive, and socio-cultural perspectives. ¿ Students will examine epistemological frameworks, transfer, social and cultural influences, and motivation and engagement to design powerful learning experiences. ¿ Students will understand the history and development of the field of educational psychology and its application to contemporary teaching and learning.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Precipitated by the very stringent accountability requirements in teacher education it has become necessary to design assignments more tightly aligned field experiences and the day-to-day practices of schooling. The design, implementation, and evaluation of these assignments requires expertise in both content (learning and development, in this case) as well as teacher development, the standards-based movement, and systems of P-12 education.
Faculty and facilities needed:
Existing capacity currently exists within the Division of Teacher Education and no unique facilities needs are required.
