Catalog Description:
This course will prepare CTE candidates to developing a classroom environment that is inclusive and respectful of all ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. Effective teaching practices and procedures will be discussed. CTE teachers will learn to adjust educational materials to accommodate ELL and utilize diverse communication styles to interact with families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Course Goal and Objectives:
The student, upon completion of this course, will: 1. Inclusion and Equity Understand the importance of multicultural education being inclusive and respectful of all ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds; as well as be able to engage families and community in school participation 2. Asset to Schools and Communities Learn to embrace, respect, and appreciate how diverse cultural populations are an asset that broadens student experiences and enhances schools and communities 3. Appropriate and Meaningful Instruction Develop and be able to deliver meaningful instruction and assessment practices for students who are English Language Learners (emphasis of TSPC) 4. Policies and Legal Requirements Recognize and be able to apply pertinent polices and legal requirements for multicultural and second language populations Classroom readings, conversations, and written reflections are intended to assist students in developing their own deepened insights into the nature of cultural competency and diversity within our schools and communities.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course is included in the Career and Technical Education series and is designed to help CTE Educators meet TSPC and ODE requirements. These courses do not culminate in either a degree or a professional certification.
