Catalog Description: This is the first Student Teaching Seminar in a three-term sequence. The focus of this course is to begin to explore the concept of professionalism as it relates to teaching and learning. Student teachers will be introduced to the Field Experience Workbook, the expectations for each term, the scoring guides for Formative and Summative Evaluations, and the Assessment of Professional Qualities all embedded in the undergraduate/post-bacc. initial teacher licensure program. Student teachers will also be introduced to the Assessment Framework for a Proficiency-based Teacher Education Program, that are aligned with the standards set by Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Conceptual Framework of WOU¿s College of Education. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Student teachers will become increasingly competent in: ¿ Cross authorization understanding and support; ¿ Professionalism in the area of collaboration, honesty and integrity, respect, commitment to learning, emotional maturity, and leadership and responsibility; and ¿ Monitoring personal growth in terms of the WOU proficiencies. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The current undergraduate/post-bacc. initial teacher licensure Education Core lacks structured opportunities for students to share problems of practice, lessons learned from field experiences, discuss professionalism, and monitor their own progress toward the program proficiencies. This one-credit, Pass/No Pass course is designed to give space to these ongoing discussions around emerging professional competence. |
Faculty and facilities needed: Existing capacity currently exists within the Division of Teacher Education and no unique facilities needs are required. |
Brief Course outline: Theme #1: Professional dispositions Theme #2: Professional proficiencies Theme #3: Connecting teaching and learning through the work sample process Theme #4: Synthesis across courses Theme #5: Self-assessment |
