Catalog Description: This course explores a variety of online tools and looks at proven ways these tools can be used to support language development and content learning for English Language Learners. Examines how technology tools can be used in meaningful ways, when appropriate, to allow additional collaboration between colleagues, teacher and students, and students themselves. Includes hands-on exploration of blogs, wikis, podcasts, screencasts, social networking, online imaging, online presentation tools, and more. |
Course Goal and Objectives: After completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Utilize technologies for professional development in ESOL. 2. Utilize technologies to support language development and content learning for English Language Learners. 3. Provide appropriate technologies for student projects and homework. 4. Identify, analyze, and use new Web technologies. 5. Discuss issues affected by technology such as copyright. 6. Explain and demonstrate the educational benefits of all types of Web applications. 7. Critically evaluate a variety of emerging learning technologies. 8. Create their own personal learning network (PLN) and contribute to online conversations. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Students in the ESOL program are required to take a technology course. This course is specifically aligned with their needs as teachers of English Language Learners and is more appropriate and useful for them than other technology options. In addition, other master's degree students who work with English Language Learners will benefit from this course. We anticipate a high demand for it. This course has been taught on a temporary course approval for the last year and has received very positive feedback. |
Faculty and facilities needed: This course will be taught by faculty in the MSEd Information Technology program and/or adjuncts who are specialists in the field. |

Keeping Up with Technology: How to Find, Evaluate, and Experiment with New Tools and Resources We are attaching a sample syllabus. It is anticipated that specific technologies included in each section will change as new technologies are introduced. |
