Course Goal and Objectives:
The student, upon completion of the course, will be able to: ¿ Experience writing processes (writer¿s workshop, authoring cycle, etc.), having multiple opportunities to write with young children within embedded field experiences in local elementary schools. ¿ Understand, synthesize, and implement state and national standards for writing instruction. ¿ Explore and critique methods, materials, software, and other resources for teaching writing to young children. ¿ Develop instructional strategies that grow from an understanding that writing is a sign system used to make meaning. ¿ Articulate professional beliefs about the teaching of writing, as supported by current theory and research in the field. ¿ Understand, critique, and implement various formative and summative assessment measures in teaching writing. ¿ Explore and integrate appropriate technology into writing instruction, including issues such as digital literacies. ¿ Explore adaptations and interventions appropriate for a diverse classroom, including: struggling writers, writers with developmental delays, non-native speaking writers, etc.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The unique developmental needs of young children in the elementary school will be addressed through the creation of this course, Teaching Writing in the Elementary Grades. Including this course within the College of Education core will allow students pursuing elementary level teaching endorsements to work with local elementary school teachers and students to integrate the theory and research in best practices for writing instruction into an authentic experience working with young children. Additionally, this course will expand upon the existing literacy/language arts core within the education program and will allow deeper and more sustained work specifically on writing instruction, an area that most preservice and inservice teachers feel they need additional coursework and application.
