COMP VERT ANATOMY

Current Course Description:
A comparative analysis of vertebrate morphology, emphasizing the study of organs and organ systems, and an introduction to the taxonomy, evolution and functional morphology of the vertebrates. Included in this course will be an examination of human anatomy utilizing cadavers. Three one-hour lectures and two two-hour laboratories. Prerequisite: BI 212 or consent of instructor ¿ offered fall term of even-numbered years

New Course Description:
A comparative analysis of vertebrate morphology, emphasizing the study of organs and organ systems, and an introduction to the taxonomy, evolution and functional morphology of the vertebrates. Anatomy at the level of the cell, the organ system, and the organism will be discussed. Three hours of lecture and four hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisites: BI 211, 212, 213 or consent of instructor.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Students have the opportunity to study human cadavers in BI 234, 235, and 236 series and the BI 334, 335, 336 series. BI 324, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, addresses taxonomy and evolution which can be better explored using non-human animals. Recent program revisions have resulted in content change of BI 212. The content that is necessary for students to succeed in BI 434 is divided across BI 211, 212, and 213. The fundamental principles of cells are covered in BI 211. Evolution is covered in BI 212. An introduction to vertebrate anatomy is covered in BI 213. Without each of these courses, students will struggle to understand vertebrate anatomy from a comparative perspective. The current course listing indicates that BI 324 is offered in the ¿fall term of even numbered-years¿. The Biology Department is moving to remove all scheduling information from the course descriptions
