BI 441/541 | Human Heredity | 4 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) HUMAN HEREDITY |
Current Course Description: Basic principles of inheritance, including Mendelian patterns of inheritance, molecular genetics, chromosomal aberrations, sex determination, gene mapping, genetic engineering and population genetics as it relates to humans. The lab illustrates topics included in the lecture. Offered spring term. |
New Course Description: Basic principles of inheritance, including Mendelian patterns of traits, chromosomal aberrations, sex determination, molecular biology, and genetic diagnostics, as it relates to humans. The course is designed for non-biology majors. Four hours of lecture per week. Prerequisites: BI 102 or BI 211, or consent of instructor. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course has been taught the last four years as 4 credits for both BI 441 and BI 541, reflecting the 4 hours of lecture per week (see attached syllabus). The new description better reflects current course content, and the lack of an associated lab. The new prerequisites have always been necessary background but were not previously noted in the catalog. The current course listing indicates that BI 441/541 is offered in the "spring term." The Biology Department is moving to remove all scheduling information from the course descriptions. *Note: In the case of 400/500 courses indicate graduate credit criterion. BI541 students will have the same criteria as BI441 students, with the addition of two papers on literature search topics within the course purview. |
Students/Program affected: Human Biology Minor (revisions to the current Human Biology Minor, including this increase, are in progress) *Note: graduate students who elect to take the graduate version of this course will not be affected, as their version of the course has always been run at the 4 credit level. |
