BI 340 | Plant Nutrition | 4 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) PLANT NUTRITION |
Catalog Description: A study of soil fertility, nutrient acquisition, transport and metabolism, crop growth and yield, and farming practices that affect plant nutrition. Laboratory includes field trips and a term-long greenhouse experiment to diagnose nutrient deficiency. Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisite: BI 213 or CH 223 |
Course Goal and Objectives: In addition to producing sugars via photosynthesis, plants cannot survive without acquiring many essential mineral elements. The goal of this course is for students to recognize and understand the functioning of essential mineral elements in plants and understand how these nutrients are obtained and assimilated. Additionally, students should be able to explain how farming practices affect mineral nutrition and how mineral nutrition in turn affects quantity and quality of crop yield. One of the most pressing needs of our time is to feed our 7 billion and increasing population while protecting what is left of our damaged ecosystems. This course will contribute to the preparation of students for future studies and careers related to environmental studies, food security and crop biotechnology. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course is an important component of the study of plant biology. Although usually covered in semester long plant physiology courses, Western Oregon University¿s 10-week course on plant physiology (BI330) does not allow time to cover these important topics. There are currently very limited plant-focused elective courses and Biology Majors who elect to take our "Botany Emphasis" are required to take two elective courses. This will provide those students with a more meaningful plant-focused elective option. This course was offered as a temporary course in winter 2011 and in addition to botany students it also attracted students from other biology emphases and other majors. Given these successes, the department is in the process of revising the "Botany Emphasis" to improve its content with this course. |
Faculty and facilities needed: A single faculty member is needed to teach this course, a lecture classroom for three, 1-hour or two, 1.5 hour lectures and a laboratory room for 2-hours. One room in the Natural Science building greenhouse is also needed. |
