Catalog Description:
An introduction to the field of Performance Art, through an examination of the history and practitioners of Performance Art, and the practical creation and development of a performance art piece.
Course Goal and Objectives:
1) To introduce Performance Art and its practitioners. 2) To explore the political, social, cultural, and personal motivations of the art form. 3) To understand the basic history of the discipline, with emphasis on how Performance Art reflects, or stands against, cultural and societal norms. 4) To examine in detail a representative group of performance artists. 5) To create and workshop new Performance Art pieces.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This is an elective class for theatre majors and others. If approved, it will be submitted as a Writing Intensive class, thereby providing theatre students another WI opportunity within the major.
