Catalog Description:
This individualized course is designed to meet the student¿s special interests in an area of forensic anthropology. Students will be assigned readings but also conduct literary research and present on a variety of special topics within forensic anthropology, ranging from the latest techniques in the analysis and interpretation of bones to role of the forensic anthropologist in the mass fatality incidents. Cross-listed with Criminal Justice.
Course Goal and Objectives:
After the discussion of the main conceptual frames that inform and connect the required readings, the main arguments of the readings are reviewed, compared, and evaluated in the light of the students¿ background knowledge. Class discussions and individual consultations will ensure that students are able to obtain knowledge beyond the key readings that informs their specific interests. Each student will take responsibility for one presentation during the semester. Presentation assignments could be tandem- or small group based depending on chosen topics. Students will reconstruct the main conceptual schemes, methodological approaches, and empirical findings of the assigned readings. Objectives: ¿ Learn to acquire knowledge of topics within a specialized field, i.e. conduct a literature review ¿ Gain insight into specific area within forensic anthropology ¿ Synthesize knowledge and critically evaluate the approaches and arguments offered by the readings ¿ Develop oral skills by providing comprehensive accounts of readings ¿ Engage in intellectual exchanges with peers
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will enhance and expand the Anthropology department. The course will be cross-listed as an optional course for a new forensic anthropology minor in the Criminal Justice Department.
