Catalog Description: This course examines the processes utilized and problems occurring in the development of new products and services. The new product development process is examined in several industries and contexts, and students develop skills and abilities utilized in new product development. Students develop proficiency in assessing and evaluating new product development opportunities and activities. Prerequisite: BA 310 |
Course Goal and Objectives: The course goals and objectives are for students to learn the principles and theory for analyzing and developing new markets and products, and to develop the skills and understanding needed for successful participation utilizing an entrepreneurial approach in the process of developing new products and services. Upon completion of the course, students will have a working knowledge of the product development process (learning outcome = ¿describe, define, and identify new product development principles¿), will understand the tools and skills involved in new product development (learning outcome = ¿demonstrate and apply these tools and skills¿), and will be able to evaluate marketing and NPD efforts (learning outcome = ¿assess and choose appropriate efforts¿). |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): New product and services development are an integral part of any business endeavor, which has not of yet been addressed by the department¿s curriculum. The skills developed in this class are important in many of the industries employing our students (e.g., financial services, consumer goods, and creative industries), and benefit students with all areas of interest (econ, finance, accounting, marketing, management,MIS) by educating them about the new product/services development process. |

Brief Course outline: The course addresses six key themes in the areas of new product development (NPD): 1) managing experimentation in product/services development, 2) the impact and integration of experimentation technologies, 3) designing/improving development processes, 4) the role of customers in NPD, 5) managing development networks, and 6) ¿learning by doing¿ (NPD project). |
